GYMNASTS from City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy (CNGA), travelled to Scotland this month to compete in the British Gymnastics TeamGym Northern National Qualifiers, and brought home a record number of medals for their trophy cabinet in Walkergate.

On 7th and 8th March 2015, 71 gymnasts (men and women) aged between 8 years and 26 years old, competed over 2 days at Scotland’s famous Meadowbank Stadium.
After a gruelling 2 days of tough competitions, the 10 teams returned victorious with an amazing 8 bronze medals and 21 silver medals. They also dominated the Youth micro, Junior Micro, Youth Level 4 & Minis competitions where they won 19 gold medals to add to the war chest!

Samantha Smith, Head of TeamGym said “it’s been a fantastic weekend, and the gymnasts displayed excellent conduct and teamwork throughout. I am especially pleased that we are now likely to have 3 teams heading to the British Championships in August, our Women’s Senior team, Junior boys team, & Women’s Youth team. This is a great result for us and we are all excited to see what all of our gymnasts can do in the British”.

The Women’s Youth team did exceptionally well, scoring the highest of all UK teams (North & South) in their age category. The team comprise of 12 girls aged between 9 and 13 years old, coached by Ruth Tonks, herself an ex –gymnast. Ruth said “I can’t wait for my girls to showcase all of their skills in Liverpool at the British. We won’t rest on our laurels. The hard work will continue. We are all determined to put Newcastle TeamGym on the map!”

Karen Weir, Academy trustee and parent was at the event and comments “I am so proud of all of them, they are real ambassadors for the north east and the academy”.
